Google Adsense Placement Review

by Christoph on December 17, 2008

I am running a large online discussion forum and use Google Adsense to make some money from it. This has provided a steady and stable income for a long time. However, I don’t know if it is the economy or Google taking a bigger bite out of the earnings, but my income from that site has dropped significantly over the last few months. I was browsing the VBSEO forums a few days ago and got caught up in a couple of Adsense and Monetization threads. From the information I found I started reviewing my Adsense placements and decided to experiment a little bit.

In vBulletin I placed my ads underneath the navigation bar (navbar) as well as inside the discussion itself. A review showed that Adsense barely provided income from the ad placement inside the discussion. All the icnome comes from the top Adsense placement. There I was running a 728×90 Adsense unit. I replaced it with two 336×280 units, but put a conditional placement in place. Registered visitors continue to see the 728×90 unit while guests do see the two 336×280 units instead. It also shows a note to guest that registered users will see less advertisements.

It is early in the process, but usually Friday’s and Saturday’s are the worst days in regards to incomes, but I am tempted to say this works great. An increase in Adsense income by 60% is pretty impressive. Especially impressive that December is usually my worst month in regards to Adsense income and really bad numbers for the last 2 weeks before I made the changes.

Anyway – we will see how it turns out over the next several weeks. However, I hope that this change will help to turn around things a little bit and revives my Adsense Income from that website. Overall it is a great way to check on things – try different ad placements and compare results. You might be surprised how your income eventually changes.
