Going VOIP

by Christoph on January 8, 2009

Today I removed the “Freeze” from my landline phone to have the number ported over to Vonage. I am going Voice over IP. This will cut my monthly phone bill from $75 to around $36 (includes tax and fees). This includes unlimited phone calls inside the US and Canada and to 17 European countries and also comes with a ton of features.

When we had signed up with the old phone company our long distance rate to Germany was 4 cents per minute, but I don’t even know when they changed it, but we were paying 9 cents now. I am too lazy to go through the old bills to see when they changed it, but we decided to try Vonage and if we like it, port our existing number over. Things turned out fine in 98% of the calls we made and so we are giving it a go. I am still getting a normal phone card so that we can use cell phones for International calls in case Vonage is down. We had one situation with a very bad connection through Vonage and that’s what the phone card is for. We had this occasionaly with our current landline provider, too – mainly on holidays where we did not get an overseas connection. So, I am giving Vonage the same credit.

Overall we have been surprised by how good Vonage has worked out. Their customer tech support is Ok. I am not too impressed with it. I had submitted a ticket when we experienced the bad call quality. This happened only on international calls and not domestic. A speed performance test showed our cable connection being just fine – still, their support was trying to point towards our Internet connection as the problem. Doubtful as domestic calls were not affected (I pointed that out several times, but …). Ok, I got my cell phones as a backup and are willing to accept a couple minor issues. Time will tell if Vonage deserves my business. At this point I am excited and really like it.

If you sign up with Vonage through this link, you will receive one month free of service with them. That’s what I used to test their service and the call quality. The savings are really good and it helps me to cut down unnecessary expenses.
